Acharonich Old Burial Ground

Acharonich Old Burial Ground was recorded by the Royal Commission on the Ancient & Historical Monuments of Scotland: National Monuments of Scotland in 1958.  Bruce MacQuarrie gifted the Museum this burial ground in 2012.
Bruce became enchanted
with the poem ‘Lord Ullin’s Daughter’ (see below) and read P.A. McNab’s book on Mull in which the author mentions that the girl was the daughter of Sir Allan (Ullin) MacLean of Knock and her lover a ‘Chief of Ulva’s Isle’ therefore a MacQuarrie.  Although most people believe the poem is a work of fiction, he may have believed that the unfortunate couple were buried in this graveyard.  Unfortunately there is no information as to  who is buried here.
Bruce requested and paid  the owner of the farm Garaidhean Eilidh (Helen’s Gardens) on which it sits, to maintain the ground and erect a monument for which he supplied a plaque with the poem.
In 1985 at the MacQuarrie Gathering they dedicated the monument and a Presbyterian Minister reconsecrated the site.  Bruce purchased the land and ‘right of way’ in 1987.  Sadly someone vandalised the cross and stole the plaque (Bruce replaced the latter on his last visit in 2008).  He was very keen that a local group was given ownership of this burial ground.  Bruce died in 2023, well into his nineties.
